Quick Workout and Recap of the Sugar Detox

Hey guys! Sorry I am writing so late tonight; it has been another busy day. I haven’t got to share many workouts lately because I have been sick for about the last week and a half and I haven’t been able to work out as much as normal. I seriously hate this because working out makes me so happy! I am real congested and have a horrible cough. Anytime I start doing any cardio I start coughing horribly loud and can’t seem to stop. Because of this, Sunday and Monday I decided to rest and not workout. I couldn’t take it anymore today and decided to try going up to the gym. I still couldn’t do much, but I managed to get in this quick workout. It doesn’t take too long, so if you need something fast and efficient give it a try!

Warm up:

  • 30 seconds jumping jacks
  • 30 seconds high knees
  • 30 seconds butt kicks

Workout

  • 10 burpees
  • 10 power cleans into overhead press
  • 20 lunches with 10 lb dumbbell in each hand (10 each leg)
  • 10 rows (10 lb dumbbell in each hand)
  • 10 bicep curls (10 lb dumbbell in each hand)
  • 30 second mountain climbers
  • 10 tri-cep extensions (10 lb dumbbell)
  • 30 second spiderman abs

Complete this set a total of 3 times. This workout was really good because it incorporated a little bit of everything, but since I am sick the burpees totally killed me. During the burpees I was coughing nonstop, and I know everyone in the gym was probably like, “get that girl out of here before she kills us all!”

That is the look I felt like people were giving me. Luckily, I am going to the doctor tomorrow so hopefully I will be better soon! The weather is starting to get pretty and I want to run!

Sugar Detox Challenge

So last week I participated in Laura’s Sugar Detox Challenge that she hosted over on her blog mommyrunfast.com. I was tempted a few times, which I write about here, but I really did enjoy it! I do not have much of a sweet tooth so it wasn’t too hard for me to give up sweets, but the hardest part for me was giving up bread, crackers, and protein bars. These aren’t necessarily the worst things for you, but they have processed sugar in them, which isn’t good for you. Being on this challenge really forced me to think about what I was eating more and make more of an effort to plan  out my meals ahead of time.  I normally try to plan out my meals, but I had to focus more this past week.

I realized that I normally snack a lot without thinking about it, and this week forced me not to do that as much. For instance, normally when I am cooking a meal, if I am really hungry I might snack on some crackers or something when I am getting my food ready. However, I couldn’t do this when I was on the detox. So if I wanted to snack on something I had to either eat some fruit or raw vegetables. Obviously, this is much better for me since it is natural and contains plenty of nutrients.

To be honest, I didn’t feel any different this week while doing this detox, but I also didn’t feel like I had to change much from my normal diet. I already don’t eat many sugars and try to incorporate fruits, vegetables, and natural foods as much as possible. But the detox did teach me that I don’t have to rely on so much processed foods and that it is possible to eat all natural foods. After all, God gave us everything we needed so I know I should enjoy it!

Food for this Week

I have been super busy all week, and I haven’t been able to go to the grocery store at all. That means I am running out of food and eating whatever I have left. Last night for dinner I actually had to go to the cafeteria at my school…

This is supposed to be tilapia, cauliflower, rice, and some type of baked carrots. I know, what was I thinking getting tilapia at my school cafeteria? Well, it was the healthiest option I could find. But I have to admit, it wasn’t half bad. I also enjoyed a salad with some guacamole.

I hardly ever eat at the cafeteria but I was desperate last night. Tonight I didn’t have much to choose from so I decided a veggie egg sandwich would fill me up. This hit the spot! I also enjoyed an apple and a carrot with my sandwich. Hopefully tomorrow I can find some time to go to the store for a few much needed groceries!

Faith in My Friday

Well, it’s that time of the week again. Time for another Faith in my Friday! A big thanks to Melissa over at freeingimperfections.com for hosting this again!

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to blog yesterday; I was super busy and the day just got away from me. I hated that I wasn’t able to blog, but I reminded myself it was okay because I can’t let my blog overtake my life. I talk about this here.

Last night Ryan and I went to the bible study we have been going to that is studying the book, Radical, by David Platt. We watch a video every week, and in the video we watched last night David was talking about how the gospel commands us as Christians to take care of the poor and orphans. We don’t need to do this because we feel sorry for them; we do this because we are commanded to by God.

Our world is so lost, and it breaks my heart thinking about it. The world has grown so far from God, and I think that we Christians sometimes forget just how serious God is about everything He says in the Bible. The Bible says how hard it is for a rich man to enter Heaven, and that a rich man has received his reward here on Earth in full. I know that I most definitely want to receive my reward in Heaven for eternal life; I don’t want to receive my reward here on Earth when it will only be temporary.

God says that those who do not care for the poor and His children do not know Him and will spend eternity in Hell. That’s serious! The Bible is no joke, and I think our world has started to take what is written in the Word too lightly. We need to cling to every word from the Scriptures and study it so that we can understand what God wants to tell us and show us.

Now, I know having money is not a sin. God blesses people financially! But God does this so that people can use those blessings to further His Kingdom. Most of us in America are rich compared to the world, so we need to be sharing what we have with those who need help. Today, just take some time to thank God for everything He has blessed you with. Ask Him what specifically you can do to further His Kingdom and how you can use the blessings He has given you to honor Him. Who knows what He might reveal to you? 🙂

I have really enjoyed this bible study over Radical, and it is really showing me to study what I read in the bible more carefully and really take it to heart. I have read or heard so many stories in the bible for most of my life that sometimes I forget its importance or seriousness in my life and the lives of everyone. God has let us have His Word, and I know I need to cherish it more than I do.

God continues to amaze me this week as He is helping me finish this stressful semester and get everything done that needs to be done. I fail Him every day, but he continues to have mercy on me. We serve such a mighty God, and it just amazes me!

Sugar Temptations

Okay, so yesterday I was tempted several times to mess up on the Sugar Detox Challenge.I am proud to say though, that I didn’t give in!! 🙂 But I owe this totally to Ryan! He makes me a better person. 🙂

It first started at lunch yesterday. I ate with my Dad at McCalister’s Deli and I got a chicken salad with a bowl of chicken tortilla soup.

This was healthy and didn’t make me cheat for the challenge, but the hard part was what came with the meal…a free sugar cookie! It was hot and fresh and looked so delicious! But I didn’t eat it, and as soon as I got back to school I gave it to Ryan. He suffered and ate it for me so that I wouldn’t be tempted anymore. 😉

So after that I was really proud of myself, but then dinner came along. Ryan and I had to go see our jeweler because he is working on making my wedding band and had a question to ask us. After we left the jeweler we wanted to grab something to eat before we went to bible study. We went to Grandy’s, which isn’t healthy, but I was able to find a healthy option for dinner. I had grilled chicken with rice, corn, and green beans.

Again, I felt good about choosing this healthy option, but the problem was it came with two super yummy rolls. Now, I don’t know if any of you have ever been to Grandy’s, but they have scrumptious rolls! This is where Ryan helped me. I picked up the roll, and said, “I’m hungry, I don’t care, I’m eating this!” Ryan reminded me how well I had been doing this week not eating sugar and that if I ate this roll I would regret it later. I (not so happily I might mention) put the roll down and continued to eat my dinner. Once I finished my dinner I thanked Ryan for telling me not to eat the roll. I most definitely would have regretted eating it, and I am so happy that my man helped me. So I can say I am still going strong for the Sugar Detox Challenge! 🙂 And of course, just like with the cookie, Ryan helped me out by eating both of my rolls to prevent the food from tempting me. 🙂 Isn’t he a sweetie? 😉

Workout

This morning I had an awesome arm workout that I got from olivetorun.com. This arms of steel workout was really hard and had my arms burning by the end. I did the advanced version, which was this.

  • 30 seconds of jumping jacks
  • 30 seconds of high knees
  • 15 push-ups
  • 25 tricep dips
  • 60 second plank
  • 15 push-ups
  • 40 mountain climbers
  • 15 shoulder press
  • 20 chess press
  • 15 push-ups
  • 25 tricep dips
  • 60 second plank
  • 15 push-ups
  • 25 right tricep kickbacks
  • 25 left tricep kickbacks
  • 30 second jumping jacks
  • 30 second high knees
  • 60 second plank.

I did this one time forward and one time backward. I did the first set of 15 push-ups regular, but after that I did girly push-ups. My arms were burning! And pretty much every time I had to do 25 dips I had to break it up and take rests in order to do all 25. But that’s okay, I’m getting stronger! If you are looking to tone your arms up for this summer, definitely do this! And check out Cori’s blog, olivetorun.com because it is awesome! After I did this strength workout I did 20 minutes on the elliptical for some cardio.

But now I think Ryan and I are about to go to the Outdoor Adventure Course in town because today you can go to the course for free! After that we are heading to see my parents with Marlee and Wood so that Marlee and I can work on addressing some of our wedding invitations with our other friend Ruth. So fun! Day 2 Sugar Detox Challenge

Okay, this is going to be a quick post; I’m hoping to hit the sack early tonight and catch up on some sleep! Today was a pretty typical Tuesday for me. I student taught at school all day, got some groceries, cooked dinner, taught a cycle class, and then did homework for class tomorrow. Time just seems to fly by on busy days like these! I was hoping I would have time to do my own workout along with the 50 minute cycle class I taught, but by the time I went grocery shopping, cooked, and did homework I just ran out of time. But that is perfectly okay! I am learning that you have to prioritize, and that  some workout days just have to be shorter than others. Besides, I make my cycling classes pretty challenging, so I still got a good workout. 🙂

Today was day 2 of the Sugar Detox Challenge, and so far it is going good! I do have one question though, is greek yogurt okay to eat? I hope so, because I ate it today and yesterday! If it’s not, then I will cut it out from now on. I thought it would be okay because Greek yogurt is all natural, which makes the sugars natural, but I wanted to be safe and go ahead and ask. 🙂 For breakfast I had some oatmeal with a banana, strawberries, and natural peanut butter mixed in. I seriously never get tired of oatmeal!

For lunch I packed a salad made up of spinach leaves, tomato, bell pepper, 1/4 of an avocado, a few chopped walnuts, and grilled chicken. On the side I also enjoyed a delicious apple.

Since I have started student teaching and packing my lunch every day, I go through so much tubber ware! I am constantly washing different pieces.

My snack was some greek yogurt with almonds, chopped walnuts, and half of a banana. So hopefully greek yogurt is okay? Someone please let me know! 🙂

My dinner was some leftover Mexican chicken from last night, roasted brussels sprouts, and steamed broccoli.

Obviously, I am definitely a veggie lover, so I am really enjoying this sugar detox so far. I am realizing how much I don’t need all of those foods with extra sugars and how much I enjoy the natural foods that aren’t processed with sugar. I went to Wal Mart today to get some groceries for the week, and I got loaded up on veggies and fruits for the week! Score!

After cycle I wanted a snack so I mixed some PB2, a banana, and some cinnamon. It definitely hit the spot! For all of my fellow friends who are taking part in the Sugar Detox Challenge, you should try this out! It was sooooo good!!

Tomorrow I am hoping to do some sprints for the Forever Fitness Challenge!

A Few Challenges and Recap of Easter

Well guys, we made it through Monday, the hardest part of the week is over! That’s how I always think of it at least. Because I mean, honestly, after the weekend who wants to go back to school or work?

Before talking about the two challenges I am taking part in, I want to do a quick recap of my Easter weekend with Ryan and his parents.

Ryan and I had a blast, and it was so good to see his parents. Saturday I went out shopping with Debbie, Ryan’s mom, and we got some wedding stuff done and she bought a few shirts for Ryan. My wedding purchase of the weekend was this unity candle and stand.

I seriously love the candle Debbie helped me pick out. This picture doesn’t do it justice on how beautiful it is. I bought it from Hobby Lobby, and it was on sale for 1/2 price so I was super excited!! When I get a good deal while shopping this is how I feel.

Except hopefully I don’t look like a little girl. 😉 Debbie also bought Ryan 4 new polos, and I must say, Ryan looked pretty handsome in them all!

For dinner Saturday night Ryan’s parents grilled out burgers and boy were they good! Check out this totally delicious, yet totally unhealthy, plate!

This burger has cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and guacamole. Then I have a small piece of sausage, baked beans, strawberries and blueberries, and some baked chips and guacamole. And yes, I ate this whole plate. Let’s just say I was a little full. 😉

For Easter Sunday we went to church and then out to eat to a little restaurant close by the church. The restaurant offered brunch and then some lunch/dinner food. We had been eating a ton of food this whole weekend so I decided to order from the kid’s menu. Plus, there is an unlimited salad and fruit bar, so I knew a kid’s plate would do. I got two scrambled eggs with a side of ham, and it came with hashbrowns as well. The hashbrowns were good, but I didn’t eat most of them because after my salad, fruit, eggs, and ham I was full. After lunch Ryan and I went back to his parents’ house to quickly pack and then hit the road. We got back to our houses late, and I still had to go to the grocery store for some food to make my lunch for today, so I went to bed wayyyy too late. But we had a great weekend with Ryan’s parents, and it was totally worth it!

Day 1 of Sugar Detox Challenge

Today was the first day of the Sugar Detox Challenge that Laura from Mommyrunfast is hosting. I am especially excited for this challenge after this past Easter weekend. You know, after my huge burger dinner Saturday night, pancakes that morning, and brownies throughout the weekend, a sugar detox is just what my body needs! I started out my morning with a yummy, healthy breakfast!

I had two scrambled eggs with some sauteed spinach, tomatoes, and onion. Here are all of the veggies that I ended up scrambling with my eggs.

Yes, I know, that is a ton of spinach! But the eggs still tasted so good! I also added 1/4 of an avocado to the eggs for some healthy fat. Usually when I have eggs I have a piece of toast with some sugar free jelly on it, but since I am giving up all artificial sweeteners and bread for the week, I decided just to add more fruit than usual. So I had two strawberries, the little bit of pineapple I had leftover from last week, and a banana. This breakfast hit the spot and gave me the energy I needed to face Monday!

After school I ran 5 miles for a quick workout. This run was so nice because the weather was seriously perfect today! I hope it stays this way! As soon as I finished I started cooking for Ryan and I. We had grilled chicken, sauteed onions and peppers, roasted sweet potatoes, and I had a spinach salad with tomatoes and bell pepper.

Yummy! And perfect for the Sugar Detox! I seasoned my chicken a little differently this time, and I really liked it! I was wanting a kind of Mexican chicken (which is why I also sauteed some onions and peppers, reminded me of fajitas!), so I seasoned the chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin. It ended up being really good!

I sauteed the onions and bell pepper in about 1 tablespoon of olive oil and put them on top of my chicken once it was cooked. This dinner hit the spot! Ryan put his chicken in a tortilla, so there are different options you could do with this meal. 🙂

I absolutely love roasted sweet potatoes, and the way I make them is super easy so I thought I would share. First I cut up two sweet potatoes (or however many you want) in cubes and put them on a sprayed cookie sheet. Then I  pour about 1 tablespoon of olive oil over the potatoes and sprinkle them with salt and pepper.

I always use this Lite Salt when I cook because it is way less sodium!

Then I bake them in the oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, turn them and let them cook for another 15 minutes, and then they are done!

You should try them, they are super good! They are man approved too; Ryan loves them!

Organization Challenge

So I am also taking part of Melissa’s organizational challenge that she is hosting for the month of April over on her blog, FreeingImperfections. Go to her page to read more details about the challenge, but I am really excited for this challenge. My goal is to become more organized with my blog. I want to figure out how to use the WordPress Editorial Calendar Plugin that Melissa has talked about on her blog before here. I want to become better at planning a time to blog and not just hoping it will happen, and I would like to have an idea about what I will blog on throughout the week. I really love blogging, and I know I would enjoy it more and be better at it if I was more organized. I love taking part in challenges!

Surprise Gift

Lastly, my night was totally made when my wonderful best friend, Marlee, surprised me with this awesome overnight bag!

She has a bag just like this, and I seriously always compliment her and talk about how much I want one. Well, tonight she surprised me and gave me this! She said she had two and just found this one and wanted to give it to me! Totally sweet right?? 🙂 I love her!

Sprints and a Sugar Detox Challenge

Today has been a super busy day, but a productive one! I went to class from 9:30-3:00, met with my thesis advisor for an hour, taught a six pack cycle class for 50 minutes, and then did my own sprint workout. The good thing about days like today is they seem to fly by!

When I woke up this morning I was really craving some cereal so I put together this big bowl of deliciousness.

Good cereal takes some preparation. That is why I used a little bit of everything in this bowl.

I mixed in some Kashi Go Lean cereal (my favorite), some off brand cheerios, and some off brand shredded wheat squares. Then I chopped up half of a banana and two strawberries to put in the mix. Next came a few chopped walnuts, followed by a spoonful of Smucker’s natural peanut butter. Then of course some delicious Silk unsweetened almond milk. Boy, it was good! For lunch I had the rest of my leftovers of the chicken, sausage, potato mixture I made last week. For a snack was some yummy Chobani pineapple yogurt. I mixed in a chopped strawberry and a few shredded wheat squares.

I used to hate yogurt, but I have grown to love it and I am so glad! It is a great snack and full of protein so it keeps me full. I used to eat snacks like Special K 90 calorie bars, and I thought I was being healthy. I eventually learned those are nothing but empty calories. Since they don’t have any nutrients they won’t satisfy your hunger, which will make you end up eating more, consuming more calories overall. So basically, always choose food that gives you some nutrients. Lower calorie is not always good.

Workout

Now for today’s workout. First I taught six pack cycle this afternoon. On Wednesdays I always do a circuit of three minutes hard on the bike and three minutes of abs on the floor. We go through this circuit for a total of three times. I know it doesn’t sound like a bunch, but trust me, it is a good workout. All of the people in my class always leave tired! For the three minutes of abs I always have us do six different exercises for 30 seconds each. Here are the exercises we did today.

  • Plank In-n-outs (You need to be in a plank position on your hands, like you are about to do a push-up, and then jump your feet in and back out. Do as many as you can in 30 seconds with good form.)
  • Bosu ball sit up to stand up (check out this video to see what this is. Also, how awkward does this man look in the video? Haha, made me laugh 🙂 )
  • Bosu ball swimmer (works lower back)
  • Elbow to Hands plank (I explain it more in this post)
  • Medicine ball toe touches (start out on your back, holding the medicine ball over your head. Raise your right leg up and bring the medicine ball to your toes. Lower your right leg and bring the medicine ball back behind your leg. Then raise your left leg and bring the medicine ball to your toes on your left foot. Continue to do this for 30 seconds)
  • Russian twists with medicine ball (video here)

 

Sorry, I know my explanations aren’t very good. Workouts are just hard to explain without actually seeing it. So I am going to get Ryan to take pictures of me doing these workouts so I can post pictures soon to better explain them!

After my cycle class I went to the indoor track to do my first sprint workout for the Forever Fitness Challenge. I was a little nervous since I haven’t done sprints since high school, but I ended up being very happy with my workout! Today I did six 400 meter sprints. Now, I am being honest, I am most definitely not a sprinter, but for not sprinting in a while I thought my times were decent. My first 400 time was 1:35.

Yup, that’s right! My sixth 500 was one second faster than my first! Okay, ya I know, it was only one second. But that one second made me so happy! It’s the little things in life that make me smile. 🙂 Overall I was really consistent. Here are my times.

I have never been fast, but I have always been consistent. My coach used to always tell me I couldn’t sprint fast, but I could sprint at the same pace forever. I guess that is still true!

Sugar Detox Challenge

So I am excited to say that I am going to take part in Laura’s Sugar Detox Challenge that she is hosting on her blog http://www.mommyrunfast.com.

The challenge will last from Monday April 1st to Sunday April 7. You can choose to either do level one of the challenge, which is just eliminating all added sugars, or you can do level two, which is eliminating sugars and processed foods. I am going to do level two of the challenge. I know this will be hard, but that’s why it is called a challenge right? If you are interested you should go to Laura’s blog to read more details about the challenge. 🙂

I think this detox challenge is a great idea. I love taking part in challenges with other bloggers and getting to know them better. Plus, this challenge is only for one week so it is definitely doable! I highly encourage everyone to take part in it!

We are getting closer and closer to Easter, and I am very excited because Ryan and I are going to see his parents and stay with them for the weekend. So fun!
