Speed and Strength Workout

Happy Friday everyone! This week has just flown by, and I know next week is going to go by even faster as I finish up last minute wedding things. 🙂

This picture made me smile. 🙂

I realized yesterday that I haven’t shared a workout on the blog in a while, and yesterday I had a pretty good one so I wanted to share.

A couple of months ago, during the Forever Fitness Challenge I said I wanted to work on my speed training more. I have not done this every week like I first tried to do, but I have done it more than usual! I have to remind myself to take it one step at a time, so just the fact that I am doing speed workouts is good since I hadn’t done any since high school.

Yesterday I went to the track and combined some sprints with some strength workouts using my awesome resistance bands Ryan gave me for my birthday!

2013-05-12 10.05.24

I did a total of twelve 100 meter sprints and 3 sets of these exercises.

  • 20 jumping lunges
  • 12 bicep curls
  • 15 squats
  • 12 tricep extensions
  • 10 jump squats
  • 12 wide flys
  • 15 push-ups
  • 10 shoulder press

I broke this down to do four 100 meter sprints followed by one set of these exercises until I completed twelve 100 meter sprints and 3 sets of the exercises.

Do whatever amount of weight is best for you, and feel free to do more or less reps.

This workout was really challenging, and the last four sprints were much harder than the first four! By the end my muscles were tired, but I loved it! It was a beautiful outside, and surprisingly Texas hasn’t gotten too hot yet, so it was a perfect morning for a workout!

Am I the only one who while I am sprinting, I feel like I am running as fast as these girls.

olympic sprinters

But then after I sprint, I look at the time on my watch and realize I was actually running at about the same pace as this girl.

fat girl running

I am not fast in the least bit, but that’s okay. 🙂

Ladder Sprint and Strength Workout

Now I have been gone from the blogging world for so long, I feel like I owe everyone reading at least two workouts in this post. 🙂 On Mother’s Day I did a different speed and strength workout at the track that I also really liked and planned on sharing with y’all several weeks ago, but I never got the chance. I did a ladder workout for the sprints and focused on arms for the strength portion.

I started out with this set:

  • Bicep curls
  • Shoulder press
  • Tricep kickbacks
  • Wide flys
  • Tricep extensions
  • Back flys
  • Push-ups
  • Dips
  • Diamond Push-ups

After this I completed the following sprints:

  • 100 meters
  • 200 meters
  • 400 meters
  • 800 meters

I did a set of the arm exercises followed by the sprints in order from shortest to longest, another set of arms, the ladder again from longest distance to shortest, and then a third set of arms. I finished with a 1:30 plank.

For the first set of arms I did 12 reps of each exercise, but for the second and third set I did 10 reps. Feel free to do however many reps is best for your body. I used resistance bands for all of the exercises that required weight. Again, make sure you do the amount of weight that is appropriate for you.

I remember after this workout my arms felt like jello, which is obviously a good thing. 🙂

2013-05-12 08.03.05

I actually hate track workouts (because I always feel so slow), but I though this made a great picture. 🙂

Do you ever do track workouts?

Would you rather do sprints or long distance? I would much rather do long distance, but I know sprints are good for me too and will make me faster.

Do you have resistance bands or ever use them? I highly recommend getting them! You can get all different weights, and they are so easy to transport for traveling.

Playing Catch-Up From the Last Two Weeks

I cannot believe I have not written a post or been involved in the blogging world for the past two weeks! My life has seriously been so crazy and busy, and if you follow me on Instagram you already know that some pretty big things have been going on in my life! Here’s a little overview of what all has happened to me the last two weeks, and why I have been absent from blogging these last couple of weeks.

  1. I got my thesis passed!! I had been working on my thesis for a year and a half, and it was such a relief to finally be done with it! The day before my presentation I worked all day on my powerpoint, and I wrote out about 40 notecards.2013-05-15 16.23.41I also have the sweetest fiance ever (in case I don’t say that enough), and he was there to greet me as soon as I walked out to my car after getting my thesis passed with flowers! I was so surprised! I love flowers!2013-05-16 14.39.162013-05-16 14.40.46I was also blessed with the world’s best thesis advisor! It’s such a small world; I ended up finding out last summer that she actually knows Ryan’s family!

    2013-05-16 14.39.35

  2. My big bro graduated with his Masters from Texas Tech University!2013-05-17 21.25.53

    Get your guns up!

    2013-05-17 21.29.24

    3. Ryan and I found a house!!!!!!! This was such a huge answered prayer, and we give all of the glory and thanks to God!

    2013-05-19 17.49.06

To say we were excited is an understatement. 🙂 The house is seriously perfect for us! It is exactly what we want, and it’s in a perfect neighborhood. God definitely had a much better plan for us than I did! After we got the house my mom asked me, “Aren’t you glad God didn’t answer your prayer about finding a house when you wanted Him to?” And, boy am I! If God had answered my prayer about us finding a house when I wanted us to find a house, we would have settled for some little house we didn’t like that much in a bad neighborhood. Instead, we have a house that we love in a great neighborhood!

Always remember, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

God is always there for His people; we just have to be patient and keep trusting in Him.

    4. We signed our marriage license!!

    2013-05-20 16.19.47

I guess this means we are really getting married! I can’t believe how close we are! 10 days now! Ahh! (This is another reason I haven’t been able to blog recently, I have been wedding planning!)

    5. I planned and went to one of my best friend’s, Chelsea’s, bachelorette party.

    2013-05-22 18.27.06 2013-05-22 18.01.03

We went to a cute place called the Mud Hut, where you could pick some type of dish and paint it, and then they glaze it in a fire and make the colors brighter and prettier! We should get our piece back later this week. I made a little candy dish for me and Ryan’s home. 🙂 I am not sure how it will turn out though, I am not the most creative person! After the Mud Hut, we all went to Red Lobster for a delicious dinner!

    2013-05-22 19.18.58

    6. Our best friends Chelsea and Tanner got married!!

    2013-05-25 19.57.09

I am so happy for my friends! It is crazy to believe that two of my best friends are married! Does that make me old? 😉 Ryan and I have spent many nights staying up late talking, laughing, and making memories with these two.

    2013-05-25 23.28.37

Chelsea was such a beautiful bride!

    2013-05-25 23.30.47

I loved having more of my best friends as bridesmaids with me!

    2013-05-25 23.32.15

This handsome groomsmen really caught my eye 😉

    7. My family and I went to a Memorial Day Party at my aunt and uncle’s house this past Sunday.

Ryan and I Memorial Day Party Kaleigh Memorial Day Party

    8. This past Monday I had my bridal portraits! There won’t be any pictures of these though. 🙂

    Health News

I also want to keep everyone up on my latest diet changes. Last week I decided to do a little experiment and see how gluten affects my diet. This just means that I am trying to cut wheat out of my diet. I had already done some research on how to know if you are allergic to gluten or intolerant to gluten, and I know I am not allergic to it, but I thought there might be a chance I have a gluten intolerance. I thought if I tried to cut most of the gluten out of my life (I say most because I have not cut all of it out), I could see how my body reacts without it. I have been doing this for about a week now, and I feel great! I haven’t had bread at all, and I’m really trying to stick to more natural foods. I won’t say I have been perfect though. For Chelsea and Tanner’s rehearsal dinner, we went to a Mexican restaurant and there was chips and salsa, so of course I ate some. 🙂 I don’t ever want to deprive myself of something I really want because I think that is when cravings start to hit people, and that usually does not end good. I haven’t had cereal since I started doing this, and the only crackers I have eaten are gluten free crackers (Although, you need to be careful with gluten free products, because lots of products that claim to be gluten free are just as bad for you and have little nutritional value).

In case you are wondering if you might be intolerant to gluten here are some of the symptoms:

    • Weight loss or weight gain
    • Nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption e.g. low iron levels
    • Gastro-intestinal problems (bloating, pain, gas, constipation, diarrhea)
    • Fat in the stools (due to poor digestion)
    • Aching joints
    • Depression
    • Eczema
    • Head aches
    • Exhaustion
    • Irritability and behavioural changes
    • Infertility, irregular menstrual cycle and miscarriage
    • Cramps, tingling and numbness
    • Slow infant and child growth
    • Decline in dental healthSource

I have had some trouble with a few of these symptoms, but for this last week when I have cut most of the gluten out of my diet I haven’t had any of these symptoms! I feel great, and I feel like my stomach is flatter. I am usually self conscious about my stomach because I always feel bloated, and I feel as if my lower stomach “pooch” will never go away. I have never understood this because I eat healthy most of the time and workout, but it was still always there. I really feel like reducing the amount of gluten in my diet this last week has made me not so bloated, which makes me feel really good!

Now, I would not be surprised at all this week if I have accidentally ate things that contained gluten without knowing it, but that’s okay. I have tried to read ingredient labels of things I eat and see if it contains wheat, and I have stayed away from things that obviously contain wheat, such as bread. I want to keep trying to keep the amount of gluten I eat to a minimum, but I never want to claim to be gluten-free, because I don’t ever want to make myself feel like I can’t have something I really want. Since I am not allergic to gluten, and it doesn’t make me really sick, I can still eat it at times. But I think I have learned from this little experiment I am doing that gluten does affect my body, so I need to watch how much of it I am consuming. I am going to keep trying to go without gluten (or mostly without it 😉 ) for the next week and see how I feel then. I feel like two weeks without much gluten should really tell me how my body reacts to it. If anyone else wants to join me, please go ahead! 🙂

But, if you do decide to join me and try to reduce or not eat gluten for a week or two, then you need to make sure you are still getting all of the nutrients you need. There are risks of going gluten-free if you do not have celiac disease (this means you are allergic to gluten) because you are eliminating whole categories of food your body is used to getting, which could lead to nutritional deficiencies. Please read this article here to learn the truth about gluten, and you can also read this to find out 5 things you should know about gluten.

Anytime you make a change in your diet, it is always best to do your research, and most of all, listen to your body! Don’t worry about trying to look a certain way or weigh a certain number, just make sure you have a healthy body.

So, sorry I have been MIA for so long from the blog world! I have missed all of my blogging friends so much, and I feel like I am so behind! I get married in 9 days (Wow!!!), so these next nine days will be crazy, but hopefully I can make some time to blog!

      1. Did you do anything fun for Memorial Day?

      2. Did you live in a house or apartment first? We had to get a house because Ryan has 2 outdoor dogs.

      3. Have you ever gone gluten-free or have you ever wanted to? Does gluten affect your body at all?

Okay I have wanted to participate in this for a while, but here is my first MIMM post! I had a fun weekend, so I thought this would be a perfect Marvelous in My Monday post!

Thanks for hosting Katie over at healthydivaeats!

My weekend started out with Ryan’s graduation Saturday morning.2013-05-11 09.48.26

Here are all of the college graduates sitting. There is a big gap between groups of students because that separated the different colleges.

2013-05-11 09.49.43

You can’t really tell, but that is Ryan going across stage to receive his diploma!

2013-05-11 10.34.43

I am so proud of Ryan and all of the hard work he has put in over the last four years to get his degree! He really had to work hard these last two years because his sophomore year of college he hurt his knee real bad playing basketball and had to have serious surgery. This forced him to basically take a semester off of school. But he took heavy loads for the rest of college, and he still managed to graduate in four years!

2013-05-11 10.35.49

It was so nice to see some of our friends here to support Ryan! From the left is Brittant, Garrett, and then Ryan and me. Brittany and Garrett will both be in our wedding!

2013-05-11 10.36.10

Brittany and I didn’t graduate or do anything special today, but we did sit through a very boring graduation, so we thought we deserved a picture. 🙂

Oh, and I was so excited a few weeks ago when I got this maxi dress! I had been looking for one and I found some on sale for $19.99 at Belk a few weeks ago. So I bought this one and one more for the honeymoon! I love finding good deals! 🙂

2013-05-11 13.26.04

After we left graduation my family and Ryan’s family all went to Cracker Barrel for lunch. I had some berry pancakes, which were to die for, with a side of over easy eggs and turkey sausage. I wasn’t able to finish it all, but it was amazing!I was a bad blogger and hardly took any pictures! 😦 I really hate this because it was so nice for both of our families to be together, and there would have been some awesome pictures! But my mom did manage to take this picture of Ryan and me with my brother and his fiance before we left the restaurant.

2013-05-11 13.26.31

It was a perfect way to celebrate my Man’s graduation.

After lunch Ryan and I went to WalMart with his parents and grandma so his parents could buy Ryan his graduation gift. I was really excited about this. Check it out…

Ryan's new TVHow awesome is that?? His parents bought us an awesome new television, and I can’t wait to use it in our new house! It is even a smart T.V., which before Saturday I didn’t even know those existed! So fun!

Saturday for dinner my Mom fixed us some baked tilapia with lots of veggies. I was really craving some healthy food after my not so healthy lunch at Cracker Barrel. This definitely hit the spot.

2013-05-11 19.36.43

Baked tilapia with guacamole on top, brocolli, salad, sauteed squash, zuchini, and mushrooms, with a corn, onion, tomato mixture. Yum. 🙂

2013-05-12 10.05.24

Sunday morning I started out my day with a speed and strength workout at the track. This was a really good workout and I can’t wait to share it with y’all. I don’t have time now because I have to get ready to go look at a couple of more houses this afternoon! Since Ryan is camping all week my sweet Daddy is going with me. I hope one of these will work! Prayers are appreciated!

You can read about my Mother’s Day weekend on my post from yesterday here.

I hope everyone else had a marvelous weekend and enjoy your Monday!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful moms out there! Being a mom has to be the most important job out there, as well as one of the most unappreciated jobs. I am definitely blessed with an amazing mom, and I know everyone says this, but my Mom really is the best Mom ever! 🙂

2013-05-12 20.12.07

To tell you a little about my Mom, she is one of the sweetest and selfless people you will ever meet. She has shown me what a Godly mother, wife, and woman looks like. My mom always puts my brother, Dad, and me before herself, and I know that she would do absolutely anything for all of us. Even to this day, I still call my Mom for advice, ask her cooking questions, and I like her to take care of me when I’m sick. No matter how old I get, she will always be my Mom, and I will always need her. I don’t know what I would do without her, and I don’t know what our family would do without her.

I decided to give my Mom a kind of homemade gift this year. I got this idea from Pinterest, and I made a gift like this for Christmas last year. I thought this would be perfect for my Mom!

2013-05-12 14.46.48

You can’t read the pan very well in this picture, but on this pyrex dish I put my Mom’s last name at the top and her initials in bigger letters on the bottom. This was so easy, affordable, and best of all, my Mom loved it! As I was almost done making it I realized I should have been taking pictures for my blog, so this is the only one I got while I was working on it.

working on pyrex dish

All I had left to etch when I took this picture was the last “F” for my Mom’s initials. (And yes, that is my old Coca Cola comforter that is still on my bed at home. I am that cool. 😉 )

If you want to do something like this, here is all you need:

  • Whatever piece of glass you want to etch. This is a Pyrex pan, but you can do plates, glasses, vases, or anything else that is glass.

  • Armour Etch Acid

  • Whatever stencil letters or design you want to be on the piece of glass

  • Small paint brush to put the Armour Etch acid onto the glass

    Here is what you do!

  1. First place the letters or whatever other design you want on the piece of glass. I taped my stencil letters on the glass so that it wouldn’t move and mess up.
  2. Then use your paintbrush to paint the Armour Etch acid on your stencils.
  3. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes, and then wash and scrub off the acid. This is permanent so whatever you put on there will stay on there forever, so feel free to wash it in the dishwasher. It won’t mess up! Just a tip, I let mine sit longer than 10 minutes because I was busy getting ready and lost track of time, plus I feel like the longer I let it sit the better it will look. I have no idea if that’s true, that’s just what I think. 🙂

I seriously love this craft! It is a great gift to give people, and it’s not expensive! Plus, I always think when you make a gift it is so much more special!

Mother’s Day Celebration

Today for Mother’s Day almost our whole family came over to our house (from both my Mom’s and Dad’s side). There were so many people, and I loved it! I am blessed with a wonderful family and the times we are all together are so rare, so when it happens I really cherish it. It was also special to spend Mother’s Day with my Mom, both of my grandmothers, and both of my aunts! I have some wonderful ladies to look up to!

2013-05-12 12.58.38

In this picture is my Dad, my grandparents, Ben (brother), Kaleigh (Ben’s fiance), and my Aunt Pam. We all enjoyed some good fellowship!

2013-05-12 12.59.00

This is me with my Aunt Nancy in the middle and my cousin, Mellody, on the left. I love them both so much, and they are both amazing mothers! Mellody has two adorable little boys, and they will be ring bearers in our wedding, along with Ryan’s nephew.

2013-05-12 14.48.02

Here are Mellody’s two boys, Cooper and Cade. They were outside pretty much all afternoon and entertained themselves with this tree. 🙂

2013-05-12 13.30.09

Of course with my family we had a ton of food! All of the food was set on the cabinet and we ate buffet style! We enjoyed chicken and beef fajitas with chips, homemade guacamole, homemade salsa, and refried beans. This is one of my favorite meals my family has. It was so good!

2013-05-12 13.30.17

We cooked so much meat. This is all of the chicken and beef that was left over after everyone ate, and there was about 15 people!

2013-05-12 13.11.24

Of course my Mom had to get a picture of my brother and I filling our plates.

2013-05-12 13.12.57

I have some wonderful men in my life! From the left are both of my grandfathers, my uncle, and then my dad. All of the men were gentleman and let all of the ladies go first.

2013-05-12 13.07.45

This was my plate. Just looking at this picture makes me want to eat it all again. I had one chicken fajita and one beef fajita on corn tortillas. I put guacamole, beans, pico de gallo, and onions and peppers on both of my fajitas. I also ate some garden vegetable Wheat Thins with some guacamole, salsa, and bean dip on the side. Yummy!!

2013-05-12 13.37.11

We also had a table full of desserts! I was full after my meal so I didn’t have any, but everyone said it was all delicious!

After eating, we spent the afternoon outside talking and watching the little boys play. Of course we needed a family picture with my parents, brother, and I.

2013-05-12 20.07.09

I sure do love them!

2013-05-12 14.59.29

The girls! From the right is my cousin, Nikki, Mellody, and then Kaleigh. Just getting to talk with everyone was so nice.

2013-05-12 15.24.18

My grandparents (Mammy and Pappy as I call them) are so cute. I had to take this picture with Pappy in my pink desk chair. 🙂

2013-05-12 16.23.43

I love Mammy and Pappy! Sadly, I didn’t get a picture with my other grandparents, MawMaw and PawPaw, before they left, but they were there too.

As you can see from these pictures, I am blessed with a wonderful family that I love very much! I am so thankful for all of these people, but today I am especially thankful for my Mom and grandmothers. If y’all are reading this, I love y’all so much! I hope one day I will be as good of a Mom and wife as you all are.

Also, if anyone noticed that Ryan wasn’t in any of these pictures it was because Ryan left this morning to go on a camping trip with two of his friends. It was kind of like a last time they could all do something together since they will be going their different ways after college. Ryan will be gone until Thursday, and I already miss him like crazy! I will be so ready to see him! He has already sent me pictures of where they are camping and it’s so pretty. I’m a little jealous. 😉

House Hunting Fail

Today’s Workout:

5 mile run

Leg and Ab workout from pbfingers.

Okay, now time to play catch up on the last few days. In my super short post Wednesday I mentioned that Ryan and I were going house hunting. We are looking for a small and affordable house to rent, that also has a backyard for his two dogs. We looked at three places yesterday, and sadly had no luck. 😦 We looked at another one Thursday morning and really liked it, but it smelled like the people who lived there before smoked, so that was a no go as well. But it’s okay, I know we will find something!

We did, however, make the best of being out and we had a dinner date at Olive Garden! This made everything so much better! Plus, we had a gift card that Ryan’s parents had given me at Christmas, so the meal was (almost) free, making it even better! Who invented gift cards? Like, for real, they are awesome! 2013-05-08 23.31.41

The breadsticks and salad at Olive Garden are always amazing! I am pretty sure I could make a meal out of just these two things. We also got some alfredo sauce to dip our bread into. I am not the biggest alfredo fan, but this was pretty good! I can only have some of my bread with it though; it’s too rich for me to have too much of it.

2013-05-08 17.52.23

Above was my meal. It was some type of grilled chicken vegetable lasagna, and it was so good! It was on their light menu, so it only had 500 something calories, which is so good compared to their other dishes! The lasagna was filled with zuchinni and something else (maybe squash?), I can’t remember, but it was very delicious! I would definitely order it again!

Here is what Ryan ordered:

2013-05-08 17.52.18

Let’s just say his chicken alfredo pizza was not on the light menu. 😉 But I did have a few bites, and it was very delicious as well!

I took pictures of one of the houses we looked at yesterday, so while in the bathroom I couldn’t resist taking a typical mirror picture. 😉

2013-05-08 18.52.03

Now, onto more interesting things. Yesterday morning I was supposed to teach cycling early, and I was little nervous because I have never taught morning classes since I am usually student teaching and not able to teach cycling until late afternoon or night. The morning classes are usually all older people, unlike the late classes l normally teach that are filled with young, college students. I made a playlist I thought the older generation would like more and prepared my workout the night before, but sadly no one showed. 😦 Here is the empty fitness room.

2013-05-08 06.35.07

But that is okay, because I still did the workout myself, and it was a good workout! After I did cycling and a quick ab workout, I ran 5.15 miles with my friend Brittany. After we were done with our run, I was starving! Some brocolli cheese eggs sounded amazing! I sauteed some onion, tomato, bell pepper, spinach, and brocolli in a teaspoon of olive oil and then scrambled two eggs in the mixture with a little shredded cheese.

2013-05-08 09.00.16

This breakfast was so good! If you haven’t ever had vegetables in your eggs, you really need to try it! It’s so good, plus you feel great after adding in some veggies to your first meal of the day! Now, jumping all the way back to Tuesday. (Not getting to write a regular post Wednesday or anything yesterday really put me back!) I went to Sunrise Yoga Tuesday morning and absolutely loved it! I really want to get into yoga because I know it is so good for me! I would love to even be able to teach it one day, but I know I would really have to improve to be able to do this. After yoga I did an arm workout that doesn’t seem like much, but my shoulders were sore yesterday! I added in a few leg exercises, but to be honest, my legs were so tired from holding poses in yoga that I just wanted to focus on arms. 😉 2013-05-09 08.20.47 I jotted this down as I did it in my phone so I would remember it. I did this as a superset, so I would do three sets of the first two exercises and then go on to the next set of two. Do three sets of all of the exercises. For the first exercise, when I say incline, I meant incline press, and I just did the bar. 🙂 For everything else, when I say I did 10 pounds, I had a 10 pound weight in each hand, so total I actually did 20 pounds. The only thing where I used just one 10 pound weight was the overhead tricep extensions. Also, for the sumo squats, I used just one 15 pound dumbbell. But feel free to do whatever weight works for you! I’m not too strong so I have to stick with the lighter weights. 😉 If you do this workout let me know what you think! Hopefully it will leave your arms as sore as it left me! After these weights, I did about 10 minutes on the elliptical before I left to go eat breakfast. I wanted to get in more cardio than that, but my stomach was growling so I knew it was time for breakfast.

Tomorrow is a big day because Ryan is graduating!! I am so happy and proud of him! He has worked so hard, and I am so happy that he graduates with a job already lined up. This is such a blessing, and we give all the glory to God. I am looking forward to both mine and Ryan’s family getting together tomorrow for Ryan’s big day!

What are your plans for this weekend?

Anyone special to you graduating soon?
